CISD [Critical Incident Stress Debriefing]
Immediately (optimally 48-72 hours) following a traumatic event, it has been found that a structured debrief, together with others who were present, can cut down on the unpleasant after effects and triggers which occur later. This process may last for a few hours and, although people are often reluctant to talk about things they’d rather forget, most are relieved to have done so in safety. This is a one-off process and is not counselling!
CISD is not counselling but it can be helpful to have a counsellor as part of the debrief team to enable the possibility to identify other underlying issues that might exacerbate the reactions to the trauma.
